Effective communication includes exchanging information as well as understanding the emotion and intentions behind the information.

Studies conducted by Albert Mehrabian, PhD have shown that choice of language contributes a relatively small percentage to the overall impact of communication. He identified “Three Vs” as key components of spoken communication which include: Verbal - 7% of interactive communication is based on the words we use. Vocal - 38% of communication relates to our voice including tone, accent, pace, and volume. Visual - 55% of communication relates to how we look (posture, gestures, facial expressions and attire) and the overall environment where communication occurs.

Communicating effectively promotes strong working relationships, and inspires commitment and esteem from colleagues, friends and acquaintances.
